The 2022 International Tokyo Toy Show (東京おもちゃショー2022) is a toy industry trade show that was held June 16 to 17 at Tokyo Big Sight at Ariake, Kōtō, Tokyo. The 2020 and 2021 events were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[1][2] The 2022 show was limited to industry professionals due to the ongoing effect of the pandemic.[3]

Application period[]

Exhibitors could begin applying for booth space on October 11, 2021.[4] The application deadline for general exhibits was on November 30, 2021.[5] The deadline for the Kids Life Zone was on December 24, 2021. After the above dates, exhibition applicants would need to contact the Japan Toy Association directly as fees become non-refundable.[6] Nominations for the 2022 Japan Toy Awards were due by April 11, 2022 and the finalists were announced on April 25.[7][8]

Attending the Tokyo Toy Show was typically free to the public, but a fee had been under consideration for the 2022 event with the potential possibility that it may be limited to industry professionals only, depending on circumstances.[4] The first two of the four days were to be limited to professionals by invitation or by completing registration with the Japan Toy Association. In past years, foreign professionals had been advised to fill out a visitor registration certificate in advance. The last two days were to be open to the public, and professionals are advised to conclude their business early as the event has become crowded during the public days in the past.[9]

The two previous years' events were scheduled to be held for the first time at the newly-completed Aomi Exhibition Halls,[10] which is part of the Tokyo International Exhibition Center (東京国際展示場), also known as Tokyo Big Sight.[11] However, both were cancelled for public health safety.[1][2]

As the 2020 Summer Olympics no longer bore a scheduling impact in Tokyo,[12][13] the 2022 event had been scheduled to return to the larger West Exhibition Halls 1-4 of Tokyo Big Sight.[9] Since December 2016, the convention center complex had undergone construction to expand capacity.[14]

Effect of the COVID-19 pandemic[]

On March 14, 2022, the Japan Toy Association announced that it would close off the 2022 Tokyo Toy Show to the general public due to concerns over the spread of the BA.2 variant, and limit it to business attendees on June 16 to 17. The size of the event was also significantly scaled back to use only two out of the four West Exhibition Halls.[3]
